Good Water Good Farming – rural water quality policy catchment consultation meetings

Recently we held forums in Cromwell, Oamaru, and Balclutha, to discuss the proposed new rules for addressing discharge from farm drains, runoff and leaching. These rules set limits on the quality of farm discharge, together with a conditioned permitted activity rule.

We have followed up the forums with a series of catchment meetings for farmers and others to understand and discuss the specific implications of the rules on their farming methods.

The meetings examined the rules’ effect on farming in each locality visited, discussed transitional arrangements and how the policy will be enforced, as well as providing guidance on what will be expected of farmers to achieve farm compliance.
