ORC agrees to fund further Carisbrook investigation
Tuesday, 28 November 2006
The Finance and Corporate Committee today agreed to recommend that Council contributes $200,000 towards the cost of further investigation by the Carisbrook Trust, to enable the compilation of the options assessment for a new or redeveloped stadium.
Chairman Stephen Cairns said further information was necessary for the council to consult on options and costings for any proposal.
"All along the Council's position on a Carisbrook capital funding request has been consistent and clear. We will undertake an Otago-wide survey of the views of ratepayers, and take these into account when making any decisions," Cr Cairns said.
"At this stage it would be wrong for us not to support the Trust in gathering the required information," Cr Cairns said. "But when we have the options and costings in front of us early in the new year, we'll need to take stock then work carefully through the process that's required of us."
"That statutory process is complicated and unique to regional councils. It will take time, probably nine months as a best case scenario and perhaps as long as 18 months," Cr Cairns said.
"The answer simply is, it will take as long as it takes. We will do our utmost to meet other people's timeframes, if our communities want us to be involved."
