Taieri lifestyle block owners invited to shelter and biodiversity field day

5 February 2010

Shelterbelts, biodiversity and native planting options along with managing Otago Regional Council (ORC) drains will be discussed on the Taieri on Saturday 20 February.

ORC land resources officer Alice Webster said the field day aims to provide useful information and practical advice which should be of interest to Taieri lifestyle block owners.

Topics will include:

  • Native species descriptions; which are best for where; when to plant and how to look after them for best results - with plants being brought along
  • Positioning and composition of shelter species for both privacy and wind protection for house, stock and crops
  • Maintaining drains and ditches and ways of fencing across them.

The field day is aimed at lifestyle block owners, but any interested farmers or other members of the public are welcome and there's no charge for attendance.

The field day, which will be clearly sign posted, is on from 2pm to 4pm at Pam and Rod Masons' 10ha Mosgiel property. Speakers will include land and shelter consultant Murray Harris, Phillip Dunn from Ribbonwood Nurseries and the ORC engineering team.

Light refreshments will be provided after the property tour and discussions. Bring warm and water proof clothing as we intend to walk around the Masons' property discussing various aspects of it, Alice said.
