COMMUNITY UPDATE 33 | FEBRUARY 2024

We hope you all had a happy holiday season and are enjoying the long summer days.

In December, we gave you a snapshot of the milestones achieved in 2023 for the Head of Lake Whakatipu Natural Hazards Adaptation Strategy work programme.

2024 begins with a formal update to the ORC councillors on this programme on 8 February 2024.

This update will include reporting on the ongoing technical studies and a revised timeline for community engagement and the delivery of the first iteration of the strategy.

On behalf of Jo Healy and the rest of the Beca team, we’d like to thank everyone for their time and contribution to the socio-economic impact assessment late last year. The team really enjoyed the chance to talk with, and spend time in, such a vibrant and interesting community.

An early draft of the socio-economic impact assessment has been completed and is with the Glenorchy Community Association for feedback.

ORC Safety and Resilience Committee meeting

On Thursday, 8 February, from 11am, we will be presenting a report to the ORC Safety and Resilience Committee to update councillors about the Head of Lake Whakatipu Natural Hazards Adaptation Strategy work programme.

What’s in the report?

This report gives an update on our socio-economic impact assessment, natural hazard risk assessment for Glenorchy and Kinloch, and flood mitigation and nature-based solutions feasibility assessment. It also includes an update on the timeline to deliver the strategy, in response to community feedback.

How can I find the report?

You will be able to access this committee report via the committee meeting agenda from tomorrow here. You can also follow the discussion of the report at the ORC Safety and Resilience Committee meeting from 11am, on Thursday, 8 February, here.

New layers on the Natural Hazards Database

In August 2023, Land River Sea Consulting Ltd completed a flood hazard assessment for the Buckler Burn.

As mentioned in our last newsletter update, the technical and summary reports are available on our website.

We have now uploaded a selection of the modelled scenario outputs to the ORC Natural Hazards Database.

You can find these under the Flood Hazard Layers heading, titled ‘Buckler Burn Flood Modelling 2023.’

This adaptation programme was initiated because complex, increasing natural hazards in the Head of Lake Whakatipu require a comprehensive management response that takes a long-term view and encompasses all types of natural hazards.
