HEAD OF LAKE WHAKATIPU

COMMUNITY UPDATE 43 | DECEMBER 2024

Kia ora koutou,

As we count down to Christmas and summer holidays, we’d like to thank everyone for all the valuable time and feedback you have given our Natural Hazards team this year.

We know there has been a lot of information to absorb, from the Socio-economic Impact Assessment to the Glenorchy and Kinloch Natural Hazards Risk Analysis and the Assessment of Floodplain Interventions Options.

Along with our earlier studies, this information has been used to develop the Draft Head of Lake Whakatipu Natural Hazards Adaptation Strategy, and we are delighted to share that the Draft Strategy is now ready for your review and feedback. The feedback period is open until 23 February 2025.

In this month’s edition, we tell you where to find the Draft Strategy documents and how to provide feedback.

Your input will be considered by ORC and help us improve the strategy to make it practical and effective. The first iteration of the revised strategy is expected to be finalised in early 2025, with timing subject to the feedback received on the draft documents.

Read the Draft Strategy and give us your feedback!

Yesterday, ORC councillors endorsed the Draft Head of Lake Whakatipu Natural Hazards Adaptation Strategy for public feedback, and today our feedback form went live on our website.

What happens next?

The Draft Strategy is now available for you to review. There are two documents, depending on how much detail you’d like to know:

  1. Detailed report - Draft Head of Lake Whakatipu Natural Hazards Adaptation Strategy - this report is comprehensive and brings together technical, social and strategic information that has been gathered over the last five years. Download and read the detailed Draft Strategy PDF.

  2. Summary of the Draft Strategy - this introduces the main ideas discussed in the detailed report. Read the online Draft Strategy summary or download and read the PDF version (this also includes the feedback form).

Print copies of both documents
will be available at Glenorchy Motors, Glenorchy Library, and the ORC office: Level 1 Alta House, Terrace Junction,1092 Frankton Road, Queenstown.

How can I give my feedback on the Draft Strategy?

You can submit feedback in three ways:

  • Online: Use the ORC website to complete the survey.

  • Email: Send written feedback to headofthelake@orc.govt.nz

  • Post: Mail a print copy of your feedback form to:

    • Natural Hazards Department, Otago Regional Council, Private Bag 1954, Dunedin 9054.

You may respond to as many or as few questions as you like, and we encourage you to explain your answers wherever possible.

Your input will be considered by ORC and help us improve the strategy to make it practical and effective. The first iteration of the strategy is expected to be finalised in early 2025, with timing subject to the feedback on the draft documents.

The feedback period runs from 5 December 2024 to 11.59pm on 23 February 2025.

Next community events: 13-14 February 2025

We are coming back to the community on 13 and 14 February to present the Draft Strategy and provide an opportunity to chat with us and give your feedback in person. We will have more details about how these events will run in our January edition.

As always, we value your feedback

This adaptation programme was initiated because complex, increasing natural hazards in the Head of Lake Whakatipu require a comprehensive management response that takes a long-term view and encompasses all types of natural hazards.

This is your community, and we want to work with you to develop understanding and resilience.
