Climate Change – flood and drainage

ORC manages flood protection and drainage infrastructure in the following areas:

  • Alexandra
  • Water of Leith
  • Lower Clutha
  • Lower Taieri
  • Shotover Delta
  • Tokomairiro
  • Lower Waitaki

Sea-level rise may generate additional flooding and drainage risks, especially for the Taieri and Lower Clutha flood protection and drainage schemes. This is because they're flood plains and a lot of this land is less than a metre above sea-level.

Our flood and drainage schemes may need capital investment to allow for the effects of climate change.

Over the next two years, 2020-21, we'll consult with the communities benefiting from flood protection and drainage schemes to ensure their level of service remains appropriate (apart from the Leith flood protection scheme, which is in the final stage of being upgraded).

The Lower Taieri flood protection scheme and Lower Clutha flood protection and drainage scheme are being assessed. This is to ensure they perform as designed and to assess the potential effects of climate change. The assessment results will help us speak with affected communities and stakeholders on acceptable risk levels and future improvements to the schemes.
