Coastguard

Coastguard is a volunteer-run charity dedicated to saving lives at sea. They have units along New Zealand’s coastline and major lakes and rivers. Coastguard units have vessel crew, communications volunteers, air patrols, incident managers and essential support crew.

The Coastguard works like an automobile breakdown service, giving you free mechanical assistance.

Boaties can become a member at coastguard.nz/membership.

Coastguard has four Otago branches:

  • Queenstown
  • Wanaka lakes

Port Otago runs harbour control – a 24/7 listening watch on VHF radio channels 16, 14 and 62.
