During wetter months when the ground is saturated, it’s likely that heavy rainfall will cause groundwater levels in South Dunedin to rise. The closer your property is to the groundwater level, the greater the likelihood that water won’t be able to drain quickly from your property.

When the groundwater level is close to the surface you may see water pooling which takes a long time to drain away, or may not at all during winter.

You may notice cold and damp conditions developing during the wetter months.

DCC’s stormwater and waste water networks are leaky in places and due for replacement.

Whilst these leaks have allowed groundwater to move into the network and out to sea, it’s not designed for this but rather as a carrier of stormwater and wastewater to the treatment plants and outflows.

Otago Regional Council has four groundwater monitoring sites around South Dunedin. You can view the latest data from these on our Water Info site.

There is some evidence that land levels are reducing gradually, at an estimated rate of 1mm a year.

It’s been increasing slowly for the past 100 years. However, South Dunedin has been built on reclaimed land which used to be a lagoon. This means that the groundwater levels are already very high, even without considering the impact that sea level rise may have in future.

The best thing you can do short-term is understand the nature of the landscape South Dunedin is built on, to better understand why flooding is likely. It's also important that you keep talking with the city council and councillors about what steps they’re taking to manage the impact rising groundwater is having on South Dunedin now and will have in future.

ORC is working closely with DCC to keep them informed of our bore monitoring results, however the management decisions rest with them and the community.
