Public notice: Regional Plan: Waste for Otago - Operative Date of Plan Change 1

Public Notice - 02 July 2022

The Otago Regional Council gives public notice that Plan Change 1 (Dust suppressants and landfills) to the Regional Plan: Waste for Otago will become operative from 9 July 2022.

Plan Change 1 amends the Regional Plan: Waste for Otago by:

  • prohibiting the use of waste oil as a dust suppressant and encouraging the use of other safer alternatives, and
  • improving the policy direction for establishing and managing certain classes of landfill so that it reflects current best practice

to contribute towards improving water quality in the Otago Region.

The Environment Court issued its decisions on Plan Change 1 on 30 November 2021 (Decision No. [2021] NZEnvC 185), 4 March 2022 Decision No, [2022] NZEnvC 26), and 30 May 2022 (Decision No. [2022] NZEnvC 91).  The Council approved the provisions under clause 17(2) of Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act 1991 and resolved to make these provisions operative under clause 20A of Schedule 1.

The Regional Plan: Waste for Otago as amended by operative Plan Change 1 will be available on Otago Regional Council’s website and can be viewed at public libraries throughout Otago from 9 July 2022.
