Agricultural Systems Scientist

At the Otago Regional Council, our mission is to support the sustainable management of our environment. We’ve recently made some transformational changes within our organisation, enabling us to focus on how we work together to be sure we can deliver on our promises and continually improve how we serve our communities. We’re not overstating when we say we have some big targets to reach, and now we need the right people, in the right roles, to help us to get there.

The Opportunity

We might be biased, but we think we’ve got a pretty special environment here in Otago, and we are committed to working with our communities to ensure it stays that way now, and for our future. Our science team plays a critical role in this, and they are currently on the look-out for a motivated Scientist to join them as an Agricultural Systems Scientist. This is a newly created position, designed to assist with effective management of Otago’s natural freshwater resources by providing professional scientific research services to Council, developing effective networks in the rural sector, and keeping us abreast of freshwater and land legislative and practice use changes both locally and nationally.

About You

The successful candidate for this position will have excellent communication skills, a strong desire to protect and improve our environmental resources, and an affinity for maintaining and building on networking and stakeholder relationships. Ideally, you will have a solid background in agricultural science, technical and research experience in soil science, land use and irrigation systems, and will be able to translate scientific concepts into solutions that are easily understood across the board, including councillors, other members of ORC, ratepayers and rural professionals. We're looking for someone who is a team player and has the maturity and confidence to represent ORC’s viewpoint to various stakeholder groups and ensure the scientific integrity and credibility of the Council is maintained.

Specifically, our preferred candidate will have:

  • A PhD or postgraduate research qualification in a relevant agricultural discipline;
  • Knowledge of the Resource Management Act and the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS FM);
  • Ideally, 2 years’ experience in a local government setting;
  • A working understanding of nutrient models and their limitations;
  • Experience in building sound working relationships with leadership, staff and external stakeholders.

So, why ORC? Well, we think Otago is an amazing place – to live in, work in and to visit. At the Otago Regional Council, we’re proud to be working each day, together with our communities, to keep it that way for our future.
