Consents Officer - Public Enquiries

At the Otago Regional Council (ORC), our mission is ‘for our future’. We’re here to protect and enhance the environment and enable our communities to do the same. To be sure we can deliver on our responsibilities, we are evolving as an organisation, and we’re not overstating when we say we have some really big targets to reach. We need the right people, in the right roles, to help us to get there.

The Opportunity

Our Consents team are currently on the lookout for a highly motivated individual to join us in the newly created role Consents Officer – Public Enquiries. In this role you will be actively engaging with our stakeholders across Otago providing information to enquirers about consent information, permitted activities and pre-application advice, ensuring applicants are well-informed of their obligations during the all stages of the consenting process. You will find yourself assessing and advising upon applications made to ORC for consents under the Resource Management Act (RMA), but the main focus will be ensuring the responses to our internal and external customers are both timely and accurate.

You will form a key part of a close-knit, results-oriented team. Valued for your ability to meet and adhere to deadlines and the quality of your technical advice, you will be integral to the success of the consenting function at ORC. You’ll be committed to achieving outcomes and providing excellent customer service to those both internal and external to the organisation, as well as someone who can build and maintain relationships at all levels.

About You

To be successful in this role you will need to hold a relevant tertiary qualification and though not a perquisite, an understanding of the rural sector and water quality would be beneficial. You will be a confident and succinct communicator, able to negotiate and advocate Council’s viewpoint where appropriate, and a team-player through and through. You’ll be able to manage your time effectively and efficiently to maximise outputs and be consistently looking to identify operational and process improvements that will impact positively on those around you

We think Otago’s a pretty special place. It covers a vast area – the third largest local government region in New Zealand. Those who call Otago home enjoy access to mountains, coastal lowlands, dramatic rivers and wild beaches. Our environment here is part of who we are, and at ORC, we work each day to look after it.

If you share this passion and can align your skills and experience to what we’ve outlined above, we would love to hear from you!
