Policy Analyst - Urban Development
At the Otago Regional Council (ORC), our mission is ‘for our future’. We’re here to protect and enhance the environment and enable our communities to do the same. To be sure we can deliver on our responsibilities, we are evolving as an organisation, and we’re not overstating when we say we have some really big targets to reach. We need the right people, in the right roles, to help us to get there.
Our policy team plays a critical role in helping to achieve these goals, being responsible for the RPS and various Regional Plans as well as liaising closely with our partner TA’s on RMA matters, and they are currently on the look-out for a suitably qualified candidate to join them as Senior or Intermediate Policy Analyst – Urban Development.
In this role you will use your abilities to think strategically and innovatively in the provision of quality planning and policy advice to Council and externally, drawing on your prior experience, knowledge and analytical skills to promote best practice planning for our beautiful region. You will be developing policies and plans promoting sustainable resource management in Otago and providing leadership to our region on matters pertaining to resource management specifically in the Urban Growth and Development space. You will be participating in all aspects of planning processes at both regional and local levels, working to develop an integrated planning framework that will facilitate well-functioning urban environments across the beautiful and varied Otago Region.
We have significant challenge and change ahead of us, with our upcoming focus on giving effect to the National Policy Statement on Urban Development and other rapidly changing national direction, rewriting our Regional Policy Statement and Regional Plans, at the same time working with partner TA’s as they rewrite their District Plans and undertake major spatial planning projects including working in partnership with Central Government.
We are looking for a senior or intermediate Policy Analyst (we will size the role to suit your skills and experience) to contribute to enabling integrated, quality urban development in Otago, within a context of ever-heightening focus on sustainable environmental management and rapid change.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- A tertiary qualification in Resource Management, Geography, Economics or Social Science (or a related field)
- Significant experience working in the above areas, with a focus on urban development
- Data analysis skills including GIS
- Local or regional government experience in New Zealand would also be beneficial but not essential
- Strong customer delivery focus
We think Otago’s a pretty special place. It covers a vast area – the third largest local government region in New Zealand. Those who call Otago home enjoy access to mountains, coastal lowlands, dramatic rivers and wild beaches. Our environment here is part of who we are, and at ORC, we work each day to look after it.
If you share this passion and can align your skills and experience to what we’ve outlined above, we would love to hear from you!
