Senior Policy Analyst - RPS, Air and Coast

At the Otago Regional Council, our mission is to support the sustainable management of our environment. We’ve recently made some transformational changes within our organisation, enabling us to focus on how we work together to be sure we can deliver on our promises and continually improve how we serve our communities. We’re not overstating when we say we have some big targets to reach, and now we need the right people, in the right roles, to help us to get there.

The Opportunity

Our Policy and Planning team are excited to now be welcoming applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the role of Senior Policy Analyst – RPS, Air and Coast. The Regional Policy Statement (RPS) sets the direction for future management of Otago's natural and physical resources. It provides the foundation for the development of regional and district plans.

In this role you will use your abilities to think strategically and innovatively in the provision of quality planning advice to Council, drawing on your prior experience, knowledge and analytical skills to promote best practice planning for our beautiful region. You will be developing policies and plans promoting sustainable resource management in Otago, participating in planning at a regional level and providing leadership to our region on matters pertaining to resource management.

Your primary role will be, as part of a collaborative team, responsible for developing policies to support the Regional Policy Statement. You will also be called on to develop broader policies to support the sound management of the Air and Coast across the region. The work is wide ranging and varied and in addition will involve managing complex stakeholder relationships, environmental policy, contributing to sustainable land-use policy and exercising sound judgment under pressure.

About You

Essential to success in this role is a tertiary qualification in a relevant field of work, knowledge and experience in local government policy, the Resource Management Act and in building effective relationships with all levels of Council, iwi, other governmental agencies, stakeholders and the community. Just as importantly, we need someone who can bring a solution focus to our new RPS, and who has a track record of successful leading-edge policy development. You will need to be agile and able to work under time pressure, as we need to deliver our RPS by November 2020.

So, why ORC? Well, we think Otago is an amazing place – to live in, work in and to visit. At the Otago Regional Council, we’re proud to be working each day, together with our communities, to keep it that way for our future. Our Planning team has a diverse background and are welcoming, skilled and passionate and we need you to be able to work within the existing team, bringing a diverse background but passionately driven to deliver.

This is an exciting time for policy development in Otago and if you share this passion and can align your skills and experience to what we’ve outlined above, we would love to hear from you!
