Senior Policy Analyst - Urban Development

At the Otago Regional Council, our mission is to support the sustainable management of our environment. We’ve recently made some transformational changes within our organisation, enabling us to focus on how we work together to be sure we can deliver on our promises and continually improve how we serve our communities. We’re not overstating when we say we have some big targets to reach, and now we need the right people, in the right roles, to help us to get there.

The Opportunity

Here in Otago we’ve got a pretty unique environment, and ORC are committed to working with our communities to ensure it stays that way now, and for our future. Our policy team plays a critical role in helping to achieve this goal, being responsible for the RPS and various Regional Plans as well as liaising closely with our partner TA’s on RMA matters, and they are currently on the look-out for a suitably qualified candidate to join them as Senior Policy Analyst – Urban Development.

In this role you will use your abilities to think strategically and innovatively in the provision of quality planning and policy advice to Council, drawing on your prior experience, knowledge and analytical skills to promote best practice planning for our beautiful region. You will be developing policies and plans promoting sustainable resource management in Otago and providing leadership to our region on matters pertaining to resource management specifically in the Urban Growth and Development space. You will be participating in all aspects of planning processes at both regional and local levels, working to develop an integrated planning framework that will enable quality urban environments across the beautiful and varied Otago Region.

About You

You will be confident building relationships at all levels of our organisation, as well as with key external stakeholders and iwi, other government agencies and the community. You will have a strong ‘customer-service’ ethos and be able to motivate yourself and others to ensure we are delivering great outcomes for Otago.

We have significant challenge and change ahead of us, with our upcoming focus on giving effect to the National Policy Statement on Urban Development and other national direction, rewriting our Regional Policy Statement and Regional Plans, at the same time working with partner TA’s as they rewrite their District Plans and undertake major spatial planning projects including with Central Government. We are looking for a senior analyst to contribute to enabling integrated, quality urban development in Otago, within a context of ever-heightening focus on sustainable environmental management. With respect to these up-coming initiatives, we are looking to appoint a candidate at a Senior level, so a tertiary qualification in Resource Management (or a related field) and 5+ years significant experience working in this area is a requirement to be considered for this role.

So, why ORC? Well, we think Otago is an amazing place – to live in, work in and to visit. At the Otago Regional Council, we’re proud to be working each day, together with our communities, to keep it that way for our future.

If you share this passion and can align your skills and experience to what we’ve outlined above, we would love to hear from you!
