Cr Deaker is Co-Chairperson of the Governance, Communications and Engagement Committee, Chair of the ECO Fund Decision Panel, and has membership in the Chief Executive Performance Review Committee, Mana to Mana, Connecting Dunedin and the Dunedin Hospital Liaison and Tertiary Precinct Planning Group.  Cr Deaker is one of two FMU and rohe liaisons for the Clutha (main stem).


Michael Deaker is serving his seventh term on the Otago Regional Council. His local government involvement began with the Invercargill City Council, where he was a Councillor and Deputy Mayor, and his other governance experience includes work for Southland Polytechnic and Selwyn College.

Cr Deaker’s priorities on the Otago Regional Council are the environment—especially water and air—and climate change. He is keen to continue growth in Otago’s use of public transport, lift the region’s biodiversity, invest more in environmental volunteers through the ECO Fund, work more closely with city and district councils and make Otago genuinely sustainable.

Cr Deaker has also worked as a teacher, a principal, with the Ministry of Education and as a journalist in newspaper, radio and television. He has eight children and 22 grandchildren.
