Regional Policy Statement

The Regional Policy Statement (RPS) sets the direction for future management of Otago's natural and physical resources. It provides the foundation for the development of regional plans and district plans.

Regional Policy Statement Review

The RPS is under review.  Council released its decisions on Saturday 1 October 2016. Most appeals on the document have now been resolved, though some provisions are still subject to legal processes. Accordingly, Council has resolved to make the document partially operative. This decision also revokes parts of the Regional Policy Statement for Otago 1998.

NOTE:  All the information below refers to the 1998 Regional Policy Statement.

Purpose of the policy statement

The purpose of a regional policy statement is to promote the sustainable management of natural and physical resources, by providing an overview of the resource management issues facing Otago, and setting policies and methods to manage Otago's natural and physical resources.

The Regional Policy Statement contains no rules. The Regional Policy Statement establishes the framework for Otago's regional and district plans.

Status of the policy statement

The Regional Policy Statement became operative on 1 October 1998.

The proposed RPS has now been made partially operative. This means that some of the operative RPS provisions are revoked. Other provisions remain in force until the review is completed. To view information on the review, click here.
