I’ve received a rates penalty notice... What now?

The due date for Regional Council rates was 31 October. Ratepayers who did not pay by the due date are sent a reminder notice (penalty notice). A 10% penalty for non-payment is added to the notice.

If feel you have received a penalty notice unfairly, or by mistake, you can let us know by filling in a penalty waiver request form. You’ll need to have paid all of your original rates invoice balance to be eligible for the penalty to be waived.

Here’s how to access the form:

  • Online: You can access the form here, by first entering your property details, and then selecting ‘Penalty Waiver request’ from the list of forms.
  • Hard copy: Please call our Customer Team on 0800 474 082 if you would like a hard copy form posted out to you – or come in to see us at our customer service points in Dunedin and Queenstown. We are anticipating higher call volumes than usual over this period – thank you for your patience.

Our Rates team will get back to you by the end of the year with the decision on your penalty waiver.

I think I paid my rates on time?

Sometimes we are unable to match a payment correctly as the information we received with the payment does not make it clear on what rates account you were paying. Please email rates.queries@orc.govt.nz with the payment details and we will investigate this for you.  If you did pay on time and it has been incorrectly matched we will waive your penalty.
