Upcoming changes to the Dunedin bus network

Media Release - 11 August 2016

A number of changes to Dunedin’s bus network are occurring from 15 August, with some services featuring new routes and revised timetables, as well as a simplified fare structure for the city incorporating Northern bus services.

The changes, which include simplified routes and a reduction in the number of fare zones, are designed to make the network easier to understand and use.

The Brockville-St Kilda, Halfway Bush- St Kilda, Belleknowes-Waverley, Ocean Grove-Ross Creek, and Kenmure services feature new routes and timetables, including a single route across weekdays, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Additional weeknight, weekend and public holiday services will be introduced for Balaclava, Concord, and Shiel Hill.

A new fare structure reduces the number of zones from seven to five, making it easier for users to see how much it will cost to travel to their destination.

GoCard users can transfer between routes within the same zone with no additional charge for that section, removing the charge for changing services under the current fare structure. A 30-minute time limit from the time of the passengers scheduled arrival applies to transfers.

ORC manager support services Gerard Collings says the revised routes, timetables, and zones are part of a series of changes being rolled out by the council for the Dunedin bus network.

“We understand that changes to the network will cause some inconvenience as users adjust to new services, however the overall changes will make it easier for people to plan their travel,” Mr Collings said.

ORC ambassadors have been on buses since Monday 8 August to help passengers navigate changes on the new routes and also on Green Island area buses.

Detailed information on upcoming changes to the bus network can be found at www.orc.govt.nz/buses . An updated 2016 timetable and information brochure outlining the forthcoming changes has been distributed to Dunedin residences.
