ORC carries out regular community surveys to understand how people across Otago view the council, its role, and the work it does. The surveys help track changes over time, highlight what matters most to communities, and show where things are working well or need improvement.
While councils are required under the Local Government Act 2002 to report on performance and outcomes, community surveys are one of the key tools ORC uses to support this reporting. The results help inform decision-making, improve services, and meet accountability and transparency expectations.
Looking across recent community surveys, some clear patterns emerge. Awareness of ORC has stayed steady over time, water quality remains the biggest concern for people across Otago, climate change is becoming more important, and perceptions of ORC improve most when its work is visible and easy to understand.
