Ways to pay your rates

To pay your rates via electronic banking select 'Otago Regional Council - Rates' from the pre-loaded payees on your bank's bill payment internet site and complete the fields as prompted.

To set up Otago Regional Council as a payee use our account number:  02-0900-0532547-00.

Please quote the Assessment Number (from top right corner of your account), ratepayer’s surname or/and property address.

Pay online through Bank of New Zealand using your Mastercard or Visa credit card. (There is a bank fee payable to BNZ for each transaction).

Set up a direct debit with ORC so you don’t need to worry about remembering to pay. With direct debit, you can either:

  • Pay the full amount owing by direct debit on the due date 31 October, or
  • Pay in three equal instalments on 31 October and the last business day in the months of February and June.

If the payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday holidays funds will be debited on the closest business day prior to the 31 October.

To be eligible for the installment option, you must have paid any balance owing from previous years before submitting a direct debit authority form.

Rate penalties will not apply to current year rates using this option.

To arrange either of these options, do one of the following:

  • Online direct debit payments (Recommended) - you can set up your payments via our direct debit payments online system.

  • Manual direct debit form (print, manually fill in and post back via mail) - you can complete a manual direct debit form and post back in the mail.

If our direct debit payment online system is used, a manual form is not required.

Post a cheque to us by using the Business Reply Envelope supplied with your account, please include the remittance advice from your rates assessment.

Pay in person at any Post Shop, or Dunedin Regional Council office or any Central Otago District Council office. Please note if you are paying at the Post Shop, either the entire bill needs to be paid or a minimum of $20, you must take your rates assessment with you.

Change of direct debit

For all changes to direct debits please download and complete the ORC direct debit form or set up your new direct debit payments online. Any new direct debit payment requests submitted online will overwrite existing direct debit arrangements.

If you would like to cancel your direct debit please email customer services CustomerServices@orc.govt.nz or send a letter to customer services with your request.

Penalty waivers

To apply for a remission of your rates penalty please complete and submit the form below.

This application is made under Council's Rates Remission Policy.

Circumstances under which a penalty may be remitted

  • All rates (excluding penalties that have been applied to be remitted) must be paid in full.
  • Remission will be considered in circumstances including death, serious illness & serious accident as at the due date and where there is an administrative error on the part of the Council.
  • Remission of penalties other than those mentioned above will be granted at the discretion of the Director Corporate Services.
  • Remission will not be considered on the late arrival of your payment due to incorrect addressing and postal service timing.
