Bus route and timetable changes in Dunedin

Monday 9 June 2025

Change is coming to some Dunedin bus routes and timetables from Monday, 30 June.

Co-chair of ORC’s Public and Active Transport Committee Andrew Noone says the changes will provide better connections for passengers travelling from southeastern areas of the city into South Dunedin, together with timetable changes to other routes to improve reliability, and introduction of the new Mosgiel On Demand service on 30 June.

The changes aim to create more reliable and direct journeys for passengers.

The updated routes into South Dunedin will mean services that currently travel along the full length of Andersons Bay Road into the city, via the Oval or the one-way system, will instead travel on Macandrew Road via King Edward and Princes Streets. This will tie in with existing and future improvements Dunedin City Council is making on Princes Street, which aim to improve road safety, including at intersections, while improving bus reliability and efficiency.

For Mosgiel commuters, the Mosgiel Route 77 services will travel via Hillside Road and Princes Street to the city, providing a direct connection between Mosgiel, Green Island and South Dunedin. Also, the new Orbus On Demand service will be introduced to Mosgiel, replacing routes 80 and 81,

The above changes will affect the following routes in both directions.

  • Route 3 (Ocean Grove - Ross Creek)
  • Route 10/11 (Opoho – Shiel Hill) Note: Route name will change to Route 10 for both directions. There will no longer be a Route 11.
  • Route 18 (Peninsula – City)
  • Route 19 (Waverley – Belleknowes)
  • Route 44 (St Kilda - Halfway Bush)
  • Route 55 (St Kilda - Brockville)
  • Route 70 (Brighton - Green Island and Brighton - Concord)
  • Route 77 (Mosgiel - City)
  • Route 78 (Mosgiel Express)
  • Route 80/81 (Mosgiel town loop) Note: Loop service replaced by On Demand

Cr Noone says South Dunedin trips will be faster by avoiding the southern end of the one-way system, and more convenient as passengers will travel through South Dunedin’s main shopping area.

To accommodate these improvements, there will be some minor changes to some bus stop locations. Temporary signs will be put up at affected stops, with maps showing replacement stops, before the changes come into effect.

As we’re making the South Dunedin changes, some timetables will be updated to reflect travel times, considering traffic volumes at peak and off-peak times. The off-peak service from Green Island to Concord, and the Dalmore and Liberton loops will end.
