Recently, ORC have undertaken analysis of the flood hazard in the Middlemarch area, which is being done in phases.

Phase 1 was a study of the conveyance of March Creek through Middlemarch with a particular focus on the Taieri Gorge Railway culvert. This work was completed in April 2024.

Phase 2 was an investigation of additional constrictions and channel limitations in the catchment and modelling of water flow across the entire township, as well as the potential impact of debris flows. The intent of phase 2 is to identify coordinated interventions to reduce the flood and debris flow hazards in the Middlemarch area.

Phase 3 is yet to begin but involves further study of potential mitigation options.
