New fares and zones for Dunedin’s public transport network will come into effect on 1 November 2026, introducing a four-zone structure and set fares based on the number of zones passengers travel through.

The new zones will cover:

  • Ōamaru

  • Hampden

  • Waikouaiti/Palmerston

  • Dunedin

Concessions (including child, youth or Community Connect fares) are available when using a registered Bee Card set up with a concession.

Child and youth fares with a Bee Card will remain at $1.50 for travel across two bus zones in Dunedin.

The introductory discounted price for travellers on the new Ōamaru–-Dunedin Route 1 extension service that launched on October 1, will increase from November 1. In line with the fares and zones decisions made by Council in September and October.

Passengers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new zones and fares before the changes take effect.

In addition to decisions on zones and fares taking effect from 1 November, Council also made changes to the Dunedin network on 1 October, to align with the start of new contracts for a significant portion of the network.

ORC’s General Manager Regional Planning and Transport Anita Dawe acknowledged the considerable feedback provided to staff, and Councillors regarding some of the changes to the timetables and routes which have had a negative impact on our passengers.

“Staff are working through the changes to ensure a full understanding of the implications, and we will make sure that we communicate next steps once we are in the position to do so.”
