There are more transport choices in Queenstown now the Orbus Ferry service, which travels between Queenstown Bay and Frankton, has doubled from one ferry trip per hour, to every 30 minutes.

Orbus Ferries timetable:

  • From Queenstown - Hourly from 8.45am until 10.05pm.

  • From Hilton - Hourly from 8.15am until 9.35pm.

We're now trialling 1/2 hourly services during peak times in both directions.

For cancellations or alerts please visit the Orbus Ferries Facebook page.

The increase in ferry services is a trial being undertaken by Orbus Ferries owner Watersports Ltd, at no extra cost to Otago Regional Council ratepayers.

ORC Transport portfolio co-lead Councillor Matt Hollyer says this is the first of its kind agreement between the two organisations and it is a great demonstration of how the public sectors and private entities can work together to efficiently bring about meaningful solutions to communities most pressing concerns.

More frequent departures would mean greater flexibility for locals, commuters and visitors, he said.

“We know traffic and parking in Queenstown is a problem and we need to take as many positive initiatives as possible to reduce this. To have the Orbus Ferries operator being proactive in contributing to greater choice for our community is fantastic,” Cr Hollyer said.

Iraj Barabi owner of Watersports said “It’s been great to collaborate with ORC to improve and expand ferry services, move more road traffic to the waterways and ease road congestion. We are delighted to play our part in advancing ORC initiatives. We are committed to water transport and will continue to make the required investments to realize our mutual goals."

“Ferries offer spectacular views of The Remarkables, Lake Whakatipu and the Queenstown basin, turning your commute or outing into part of the experience."

“We expect it to be well received by the Queenstown community, commuters, visitors, and the local tourism industry.”

The 20-minute cruise connects Queenstown Bay, Bayview, Frankton Marina and The Hilton Hotel giving people more transport choices.

It provides an alternative means of transport for Queenstown residents, commuters, Kelvin Heights residents, Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa guests, domestic and international visitors, tourism operators, accommodation providers, and people travelling regularly between Frankton and the town centre.

Customers should continue to check service updates before travelling, as sailings can occasionally be affected by weather conditions. Tag on with your Bee Card for discounted fares, and kids under five travel free.
