The Opportunity

We are looking for an Environmental Technician to join our Environmental Monitoring team on a fixed-term, 18-month, full-time basis (37.5 hours per week). The role will sit within our Central Otago team and can be based in either Alexandra or Queenstown. We would also consider basing the role in Wanaka for a candidate with a high level of relevant experience and technical expertise. We welcome applicants of all skill levels, both entry level and senior experience for this role.

The purpose of this position is to conduct field measurements, field maintenance of the monitoring infrastructure, advise on environmental data sampling, as well as the validation and archiving of key environmental parameters. The information is used to inform the public and key stakeholders about the state of the environment in Otago and to enable the Council to make informed decisions. The key monitoring areas for this role are surface water quality and quantity.

As an Environmental Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Collecting, validating, and archiving environmental and survey data
  • Providing technical advice on surface water quality and quantity monitoring to the group and other departments in ORC
  • Following procedures and standards to ensure best practice
  • Reviewing data to ensure compliance

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A tertiary degree in Environmental Sciences, Geography/Geology, Biology, Biology/Chemistry related fields or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Current full NZ Drivers Licence
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar position
  • Experience in time-series data processing techniques and construction of data collection platforms including telemetry systems
  • Knowledge of monitoring parameters and sampling techniques for surface water quality and quantity
