The North Otago Integrated Catchment Group is being established in early 2027 to co-develop a Catchment Action Plan for the area. There will be an "expressions of interest" process to select the group, visit this page again early 2027 to find a link.

The group will bring together mana whenua, Otago Regional Council (ORC), Waitaki District Council (WDC), Department of Conservation, landowners, community representatives and environmental organisations to identify local priorities and actions.

The North Otago CAP area stretches from the Waitaki Bridge through Oamaru, Moeraki and Palmerston to the Waikouaiti River. It includes the catchments of the Kakanui, Shag, Waikouaiti and Pleasant rivers, along with an extensive coastal margin.

It is home to significant natural, cultural and historical values. High natural character areas include the upper Kakanui and Waianakarua catchments, Trotters Gorge and the upper Waikouaiti River. The Kakanui River holds deep cultural significance for Kāi Tahu, and the region contains important rock art sites and shelters that provide a unique record of the lives and traditions of tūpuna.

Community engagement will be an important part of developing the plan, with opportunities for people to share their knowledge, values and aspirations throughout the process.

The North Otago Catchment Action Plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
