The Opportunity

We are looking for two Compliance Officer – Biosecurity/Senior Compliance Officer – Biosecurity to join our Environmental Implementation team on permanent, full-time, (37.5 hours per week) basis, in our busy Dunedin, Alexandra or Oamaru office(s). We welcome all skill levels, both entry level and senior experience, with details covered below for what the team is after. In this role you will be play a key role in setting and upholding compliance expectations across the region.

The purpose of this position is to lead and deliver high quality, legally robust, and technically sound biosecurity compliance services on behalf of the Otago Regional Council. This role operates under the legislative framework of the Biosecurity Act 1993 and the Otago Regional Pest Management Plan, with a clear mandate to uphold and enforce the Council’s statutory responsibilities in a way that protects Otago’s environment, biodiversity, economy and communities.

As a Compliance Officer – Biosecurity, you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking inspections and assessing compliance in relation to biosecurity
  • Collecting surveillance and monitoring data while on compliance site visits
  • Encouraging compliance through the provision of sound advice and information to the public
  • Supporting the development of collateral to be utilised for biosecurity advice
  • Supporting incursion responses where required

About You

Senior Compliance Officer – Biosecurity

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in appropriate discipline, i.e. Environmental Management, Conservation, Biosecurity
  • A current full driver’s license
  • At least 5 years’ experience in data capture and analysis, risk management, working in a regional council or regulatory organisation, mentoring colleagues and delivering compliance outcomes
  • Knowledge of pathways for biosecurity issues in freshwater, marine and terrestrial settings
  • Ability to translate technical information, rules and policy into ‘on the ground’ solutions

Compliance Officer – Biosecurity

  • A tertiary qualification in an appropriate discipline e.g. Environmental management, conversation, biosecurity
  • Experience in data capture
  • Risk management experience
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Well developed field skills, particularly with respect to safe outdoor working practices
