Urban development shapes the future of our communities.

Through urban development we

• improve our towns and cities to support changing populations
• enhance transportation systems to keep people moving
• balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.

Because Dunedin and Queenstown have large, growing populations, we need to have a plan on how we will manage these populations. We need to make sure that we can meet expected demand for housing and business - over the short, medium and long term. 

Local authorities have to follow rules from the National Policy Statement on Urban Development 2020. Otago Regional Council (ORC) has worked with Dunedin City Council and is working with Queenstown Lakes District Council to create a Future Development Strategy.

The strategic documents will help both areas to plan for sustainable long-term growth and manage urban planning.
