ORC has created the guidelines for the management programs based on our Regional Pest Management Plan.
Pest management uses different programs and measures to control pests and organisms. Community engagement is an essential part of our ongoing pest management efforts. Our pest management strategies include exclusion, eradication, containment, sustained control, and site-specific approaches to address pest-related challenges.
Overall, pest management aims to control and mitigate the impacts of pests and organisms covered by the plan to protect the environment and human activities.
The exclusion programme aims to stop certain pests that are in very low numbers or in surrounding areas from establishing in Otago.
The eradication programme aims to get rid of all of these pests in Otago.
The progressive containment programme aims to stop a pest from spreading and/or contain it to a certain area.
There is no programme in place for an Organism of Interest (OOI), but they are watch-listed.
The sustained control programme aims to provide for ongoing control of the pest to reduce its impacts on values and spread to other properties.
Site-led programmes have rules for specific pests that only apply in that area. Site-led areas have special biodiversity and other values to protect.
An unwanted organism is not managed under the ORC Pest Plan but may be controlled as part of our Biosecurity Strategy.
