Natural Hazards Adaptation Specialist

The Opportunity

We are looking for Natural Hazards Adaption Specialist to join our team on full time (37.5 hours per week), fixed term 12-month basis in our busy Dunedin office.

The purpose of this position is to support the timely and effective delivery of ORC services and work programmes related to the management of natural hazards, in particular for natural hazards and climate change adaptation.

As a Natural Hazards Adaption Specialist, you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with the timely and effective delivery of the Councils services related to the natural hazard's adaption.
  • Interpreting, analysing, and evaluating data (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Prepare technical and engagement reports and updates to governance.
  • Identifying and reporting of trends and evolutions and emerging issues in the field of natural hazards and climate change adaptation and risks management.
  • Assist communities and stakeholders to understand, develop and implement natural hazards adaptation approaches, strategies, and plans.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with relevant central government agencies and territorial authorities.

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in social science, environmental science, geography (human and/ or physical), policy, planning, earth or physical science or associated fields
  • Sound knowledge of natural hazards risks management, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaption and planning, strategy development.
  • Demonstrated scientific and analytical rigour.
  • Well-developed and proven communication, presentation and writing skills for a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to work in a complex work environment, to deal with ambiguity and across functions.
  • An understanding and passion for applying te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nautral hazards and climate adaption planning practice, supported by Councils Significance, Engagement and Maori Participation framework.
  • Experience in flood hazard management would be an advantage.
