The Opportunity

We are looking for an Environmental Officer to join our Compliance team on a permanent, full time (37.5 hours per week) basis, in our busy Dunedin office. The purpose of the role is to provide professional, legally and technically sound services for the Council. The role focuses on Environmental Regulatory Monitoring under the Resource Management Act and other legislation the Otago Regional Council is responsible for.

This role has a mixture of field work and office-based tasks and focuses on completing compliance inspections of consented and permitted activities. The Environmental Officer will identify resource management issues, assess compliance with resource consent conditions, assist with incident response when required and provide education to the public.

As part of the role, you will also be expected to take part in the ORC 24/7 Pollution Hotline service.

As an Environmental Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking auditing and assessing compliance with resource consents and permitted activities across Coastal Otago
  • Assisting with notifications and reporting within the Contaminated Land space, as required
  • Promoting compliance through the provision of sound advice and information to the public
  • Giving presentations to the public to aid in their understanding of, and compliance with, statutory responsibilities of the Council
  • Responding to pollution complaints and contributing to the Pollution Hotline afterhours roster
  • Collaborating with other Environmental staff to develop and maintain processes for quality assurance checking as required

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in environmental sciences
  • Regulatory or enforcement experience
  • Risk management experience
  • Strong inter-personal skills and an ability to relate to a variety of people combined with a strong customer focus
  • Experience working in related industries such as forestry, water treatment, rural, contaminated land, or earthworks
  • A flexible and adaptable approach, including the ability to work longer days in the field or travel within the region when required
