Tokomairiro Kaitangata possum control - poison warning

Regional Services wishes to advise that a ground based possum control operation will be taking place to keep possum numbers under control to prevent spread of TB. This operation will be conducted as a part of the TBfree New Zealand programme.

Areas covered: From the township of Kaitangata the boundary runs north along Lakeside Road to the top of Lake Tuakitoto then follows the wetland area to Robson Road where it veers back in a southwesterly direction to follow the forestry boundary north past the ends of Elliotvale, Cockburn, Moneymore and Allison Roads. From here it runs to a point where Elloitvale Road meets Back Road and the Toko Mouth Road. From this point it follows the Toko River to the sea and then turns in a southerly direction to follow the coastline to the North Branch of the Clutha River. From the Clutha River mouth the boundary runs upstream to Kaitangata where it runs behind the township to again join up at the start at Lakeside Road.

Operation date: 10th February 2013 to 1st May 2014

Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison: Possum habitats will be targeted using Feratox encapsulated cyanide baits in bait bags, bait stations or strikers and will be attached to trees, and suitable habitat.

Feratox capsules (dyed green) will be placed: in peanut paste inside biodegradable blue or white bait bags or strikers, or in bait stations with cereal prefeed.
The public is warned not to enter these areas and not to remove carcasses or baits. Baits are dangerous to people and dogs.

General warning

• Do not touch poison baits/bait stations/traps
• Do not touch poisoned possum carcasses
• Keep pets under supervision; do not let dogs eat poisoned carcasses
• Do not leave children unattended
• Follow the advice on the poison warning signs.
