Twenty-eight community-led environmental projects across Otago will receive a share of $919,800 through the Otago Regional Council’s 2026 ECO Fund.

Projects include biodiversity restoration, predator and rabbit control, wetland and catchment restoration, erosion management, weed removal, native planting, and environmental education.

ORC Councillor Chanel Gardner says the funding recognises the significant work already being undertaken by communities across Otago.

“The strength of this year’s applications reflects the commitment of communities across Otago to improving their local environment. Every dollar in the ECO Fund comes from ratepayers, so our responsibility is to ensure funding is allocated to projects that are well planned, deliver measurable environmental outcomes, and provide lasting value for the wider community.”

This year’s funding round attracted 53 applications seeking more than $2.2 million, highlighting the strong demand for the programme.

“The panel considered a wide range of high-quality applications, which made for some difficult decisions. The projects recommended for funding demonstrated clear environmental benefits, strong community commitment, and the ability to deliver lasting outcomes. While we couldn’t support every worthy project, the assessment process was designed to ensure available funding was directed where it could achieve the greatest benefit.”

A review of the ECO Fund will be undertaken in 2026 to ensure it continues to deliver effective environmental outcomes, reflect community priorities, and provide good stewardship of ratepayer funding.
