Reptiles of Otago

Did you know Aotearoa New Zealand has an extraordinary variety of native reptiles? We share this country with tuatara, sea snakes, sea kraits, marine turtles and a whopping 126 species of lizards. And in Otago we have 34 species of reptile, one of the highest of any region in the country!

Otago’s remarkable reptiles

Working with science communicators at Tūhura Otago Museum and reptile biologists Samuel Purdie at Southern Lakes Sanctuary and Carey Knox at Southern Scales we've developed factsheets for all lizards and tuatara in Otago.

Our factsheets provide information for the 18 skinks, 13 geckos and tuatara. We provide information on their conservation status, distribution, main threats, identifying features, habitats where they are found, and what they eat.

Please feel free to share these around, so we can raise awareness about Otago’s beautiful reptiles.

Learn more about Otago’s remarkable lizards and their conservation status in the Otago Regional Threat Assessment report.
