The RPMP is a statutory requirement under the Biosecurity Act 1993. The Council’s current RPMP was established by Council resolution on 25 September 2019, with a duration of ten years. The Biosecurity Act requires an RPMP to be reviewed every ten years, irrespective of the duration of the plan. The review of the current plan has begun early, in order to address issues that are impacting on the effectiveness of Otago’s pest management programmes.
The review of the current Pest Plan commenced on 1 July 2025, after Council endorsement of the project plan in May 2025.
The review needs to follow the steps required by the Biosecurity Act 1993. ORC will engage with partners, key stakeholders and other affected parties to develop a proposal for a new plan. This proposal will then undergo a public notification process, where everyone can have their say. The proposal will provide the basis for the new pest management plan, which the Project Team aims to present to our Council in mid-2028.
The Regional Pest Management Plan (Pest Plan) sets out the framework for how pest plants and animals specified in the plan will be managed in Otago over the next 10 years.
The Otago Regional Pest Management Plan 2019–2029 sets out how pest plants and animals are managed across Otago under the Biosecurity Act 1993. The plan is now being reviewed to ensure it remains effective and resilient. Learn about purpose of the plan, why the review is needed, and how you can get involved in the process.
