Welcome to the May issue of On-Stream

We hope that the move to Alert Level 2 has been smooth for you and your families. It’s been a strange time to say the least and we hope you all got through lock-down ok. Our essential services, such as pollution response and flood monitoring, continued during lock-down, while the majority of the ORC team was able to continue with their work while at home. There's information about how ORC is operating at Alert Level 2 in the link below, as well as the government’s official COVID-19 site.

This month we have information about how Otago people with expertise on a range of topics can get involved in the development of Otago's Regional Policy Statement, an update on water plan changes, a message from our rural liaison team, and reminders about good practice on Moving Day and for winter grazing.

Ballance Farm Environment Awards
Congratulations to Sam and Liz Barton (right) from Tapanui who won the ORC sponsored award for quality water management at the recent Ballance Farm Environment Awards. They were held online this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Well done also to Anna and Ben Gillespie from Galloway who were the Otago Supreme Award winners.
Enviroschools
Poolburn Primary School students have been finding out about their stream with the help of Enviroschools facilitator Anna Robinson. The students got their feet wet assessing the health of their local stream and Anna was impressed by how much they knew about water quality and why it's so important to look after our water.
Plan change 6AA
Plan Change 6AA postponed the date when certain rules controlling discharge contaminant concentration and rules on nitrogen leaching come into force from 1 April 2020 to 1 April 2026. This plan change is now operative. Read more here.

Update from the Rural Liaison Team

As a sector we continue to go from strength to strength using technology. In April we had some great webinars around winter grazing and ORC water plan changes from Dairy NZ and Beef + Lamb NZ. North Otago Catchment group NOSLaM has also put three short videos together about winter grazing, covering compliance, animal welfare and good management practice. Make sure you check these out here.

At the time of writing we are still awaiting the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to release their intended approach to the proposed Water Quality Plan Changes. The proposal includes two different plan changes: a discharge management plan change to the Water Plan (Plan Change 8), and a dust suppressant and landfill plan change to the Waste Plan (Plan Change 1). We will keep you updated as soon as we know when the proposed plan is notified by EPA.

This month, keep an eye out for up-to-date information about any COVID-19 restrictions for Moving Day. This MPI link is a great source of information, or refer to your industry representatives. There's also a reminder below about protecting Otago's waterways when you move your stock.

On the subject of moving, 22 May will be Jason’s last day working in North Otago for ORC. We wish him well on his new adventures and thank him for the work he has done in the area.
