Kia ora, welcome to the July 2021 edition of On-Stream

We hope you are managing to keep warm and cosy - it's getting very chilly out there! This month we have a reminder about water metering records, a summary of the recent consultation in the Manuherekia Rohe, some new factsheets to share, information about how to "soil your undies", a reminder to have your say on our proposed new Regional Policy Statement, and more.
Water metering records due at the end of this month

Do you have a resource consent to take water? Your water metering records are due on 31 July. If you’re not sure how to get the right information, or want to know more about water metering, including changes to water metering requirements introduced in 2020, click here

Summary of Manuherekia Scenarios consultation

Thanks to everyone who took part in our recent consultation about options for minimum flow scenarios in the Manuherekia River. We received a total of 1,089 submissions. A summary report of the consultation can be viewed here

New factsheets: Critical Source Areas and Wetlands

We have developed a new factsheet about Critical Source Areas that outlines what these areas are and how they should be managed on farms to protect water quality. Download the factsheet here.

New national legislation has strengthened the protection of wetlands. If you have wetlands on your property, you need to be aware of the new rules. This new wetlands factsheet will help you work out whether you have a wetland on your property, and if you do, what you need to do.

New Environmental Implementation Team at ORC

A newly formed ORC Environmental Implementation team will combine community-facing biodiversity, biosecurity and freshwater staff into one team. The new team will focus on making progress on environmental issues in both urban and rural catchments through partnerships with mana whenua, local communities and landowners, as well as "boots on the ground". Enviroschools news
Soil your undies

Some North Otago schools started learning all about why healthy soil is important to us all. They have learnt how to do worm surveys, measure soil compaction and water infiltration rates. They can tell you about the different types of soil in the area and the things we need to do to look after our soil.

The best part has been burying undies. They dig them up a couple months later and the more degraded the cotton undies the busier the microbes have been, meaning the healthier the soil.

This project is a collaboration with NOSLAM, East Otago Catchment group and lots of other groups keen to get young people passionate about soil.

In brief
Dunedin groundwater monitoring
From early August we'll be installing additional groundwater monitoring equipment in South Dunedin and low-lying areas of Dunedin City. This will give us a better understanding of groundwater movement beneath the city, and vertical land movement over time.

Reminder about RPS submissions
Tell us what you think about Otago's proposed Regional Policy Statement by making a submission at www.orc.govt.nz/RPS before 3pm on 3 September. This document is important because it sets the direction for future management of Otago's natural and physical resources.

Boneseed
This pest is mostly found in coastal areas where it shades out native seedlings. It can produce up to 50,000 seeds a year and can reproduce for up to 10 years! Find out more about this persistent pest and what you can do about it here.
