Kia ora, welcome to the October 2021 edition of On-Stream

We hope you're enjoying the longer evening light and all the spring flowers in bloom. In this edition of On-Stream, if you live in the Upper Lakes Rohe or the Catlins FMU, we invite you to the first consultation sessions we're having around the region to develop a new Land and Water Regional Plan. You'll also get an update from Enviroschools, learn about our liquefaction study in Glenorchy, see some great work going on in the Pomahaka Catchment area, and find out how to be on the lookout for October's pest of the month – the wallaby.
Have your say on land and water – events coming to Wanaka, Queenstown and Owaka

Do you live in the Upper Lakes Rohe* (check this map) or the Catlins Freshwater Management Unit (FMU) (check this map)?

We’re developing a new Land and Water Plan in partnership with Kāi Tahu, including specific rules and limits on water and land use in your area.

We’ll be in the Upper Lakes Rohe and the Catlins FMU in November and we’d love to hear how you
want us to look after your environment.

Please come and tell us at the following community meetings:

  • 17 November, 12.30-2pm or 7-8.30pm, Queenstown Events Centre, Frankton
  • 18 November, 12.30-2pm or 7-8.30pm, Lake Wanaka Centre, 89 Ardmore St
  • 29 November, 12.30-2pm or 7-8.30pm, Owaka Community Centre, 9 Ovenden St

You are welcome to drop-in before or between the meetings to talk to staff and councillors.

You will be able to give feedback at the meeting or after the meeting online at www.orc.govt.nz/UpperLakes or www.orc.govt.nz/Catlins. These webpages also contain background information for each area.

Glenorchy liquefaction study at head of Lake Wakatipu

ORC is working to improve its understanding of the sediments underlying Glenorchy, and its risks of liquefaction if there was to be a major earthquake event.

Liquefaction is a natural process triggered by earthquake shaking, causing soil to behave like a fluid. The shaking causes sediments to eject onto the ground surface, which can cause the ground to settle, crack or spread laterally. This results in temporary loss of soil strength, potentially causing significant damage to land, building and infrastructure.

This investigation will help us plan and prepare for earthquakes and other natural hazards better. Find out more.

Enviroschools
Queenstown Primary School students had a very frosty day for their planting day at Moke Lake recently. They grow the plants from seedlings at school and then plant them into rabbit-proof fenced areas. They loved finding the worms and also a caterpillar that they were keen to learn more about back at school. The students will come back to weed around the plants and water them in February.

In brief
Pomahaka Corridor Planting Project
Great to see the mahi of farmers in the Pomahaka area to protect the river from stock and unwanted nutrients in this article. A reminder that riparian planting guides for each area of Otago can be found here.

Pest of the month: Wallabies
Wallabies have the potential to cause massive damage to our biodiversity and economy if they’re left to get out of control. If you see a wallaby report it to us by calling 0800 474 082 or fill in the form on our website here.

ORC fund to support environmental projects
A new ORC fund to support projects with consent fees has been used for the first time by a Wānaka-based group receiving funding to cover the costs of a discharge consent for compost and leachate, to operate a green waste composting and worm farm. Find out more about the fund for environmental project consents here.

Flood protection information sessions at Mosgiel, Outram and Balclutha
Thanks to everyone who came to our drop-in sessions about flood protection and drainage schemes. It was a great chance for us to hear your views and answer the questions you had. We hope attendees came away feeling more informed! Click here for more information.
