On-Stream

Our YourSay page is a hub of activity for some key bodies of water around Otago at the moment. Consultation has now opened for Lake Tuakitoto and Tomahawk Lagoon, so head online and vote on the restoration projects that are most important to you. There is also a new page, "What's happening with Lake Hayes?" to help people understand, connect with and work together to improve Lake Haye’s water quality.

ORC will be at the Otago Field Days in Palmerston on 12 and 13 October. If you are going to be there, make sure you come and say hello to our friendly staff.

We hope you're enjoying the longer days,
The ORC team

Feature: Dairy Farm Inspections
From the 1st of September we have started our yearly dairy inspections. These are done to make sure the rules in the Water Plan are met, and Otago’s waterways are protected.

Our inspections will focus on farm infrastructure in terms of potential environmental risk, proximity of waterways to irrigated areas, effluent management, and discharges of sediment or silage leachate that have the potential to reach water.

Properties that meet one or more of the following criteria will be inspected first:
  • Those in a catchment with poor or declining water quality
  • Those that have insufficient effluent storage
  • Those that use travelling irrigators (or similar high-rate application systems), or have inadequate fail-safe systems.

Last season we carried out 165 inspections where we followed similar assessment criteria to last year. We found 13 out of 165 inspections to be non-compliant and this was predominately due to over application of effluent water to saturated soils and discharge of silage leachate.

We want to reassure you we are following a decontamination protocol for M Bovis. All our vehicles have a decontamination kit and staff are following a comprehensive procedure, which includes contacting the landowner before entering any property for a dairy inspection.

In previous years, most dairy operators displayed good practices in protecting our waterways and our environment. We are encouraged to see many farmers running successful businesses and working towards Good Water in Otago.

Upper Clutha Lakes and Catchment Community Water Management Plan.

Last month I attended an urban stormwater workshop in Wanaka. The workshop was an initial action within the Upper Clutha Lakes and Catchment Community Water Management Plan. The project is carried out under the umbrella of the Upper Clutha Lakes Trust and funded by the Freshwater Improvement Fund.

The objective of the workshop was to gain an understanding of existing and planned urban stormwater management for Lake Wanaka, and determine how to prioritise future work to address identified gaps. An Urban Run-off Research programme that investigates the impacts of urban run-off on the ecosystems of Roys Bay in Lake Wanaka, will form part of the plan.

The Trust secured funding from the Government’s Freshwater Improvement Fund (FiF) following an application lodged by ORC on behalf of the Trust.

A key part of the project will be the development and management of a water management plan, supported by stakeholder entities including iwi, urban residents, tourism operators, visitors, farmers, the Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council, and scientists.

The outcomes from these projects will improve and maintain the long-term health of the wider Upper Clutha area including Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea, and the Clutha and Cardrona Rivers. We're excited to be part of this and will give you regular updates.

Recently I attended the Pomahaka Stakeholder meeting. It was a great hui with much collaborative thinking, and the success of the meeting reflected the hard work the community has been putting into improving the environment throughout their catchment.

Lake Tuakitoto is another area which needs our support. Online consultation for the future of the lake is now open on ORC's YourSay page at https://yoursay.orc.govt.nz/tuakitoto

Please take the time to check it out and vote on the projects you think ORC should prioritise. You can also contribute new project ideas. We look forward to receiving your feedback on this exciting project.

This will be my last issue of On-Stream as I'm off to pursue landscape architecture. I've loved my time at ORC and meeting many of you, but it's time to welcome back Bex from maternity leave.

It's great to be back after some time off with baby Begg. While I am sorting out a new normal routine I am working part time, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or I can help with anything in South Otago.

Looking forward to seeing you all out and about.

Long may this outstanding spring weather last, although it does appear that a shower of rain would be appreciated by most in the region.

Are you coming to the Otago Field Days in Palmerston? ORC will have a stand there and you may even secure yourself a Wallaby souvenir if you swing past. Last year we had plenty of enquiries and interest in the distribution of Wallaby sightings in Otago.

We will have our updated map with us for you to check out, and if you have any recent sightings we would love to hear about them.

Agrichemical collections
Agrecovery is making it easy for you to get rid of your agricultural chemical waste. Bookings for collections in Otago close on 15 October, with collections starting mid-November. To make a booking and to find out more information about Agrecovery, check out their website: www.agrecovery.co.nz.

Rooks

We are on the lookout for rooks! Spring is the best time to spot a rook, as it is when they nest. So if you spot a rook report it to ORC Environmental Officer Malcolm Allan on 027 278 8498 (North Otago), Bryce Smith on 027 592 2489 (South Otago) or ORC at 0800 474 082.

Outdoor burning
Air is one of our most valuable resources and outdoor burning can be an air pollutant. Under our Air Plan the only materials that can be burnt outdoors are untreated wood, paper, cardboard or vegetation. For more information see our website.
